Anyone who is suspected of, charged with, or indicted for a federal offense and cannot afford an attorney. Anyone contacted to testify or appear as a witness before a federal grand jury. Anyone who is subpoenaed to appear in US District Court. If individuals are contacted regarding an investigation or alleged crime by any of the following agencies, they may need a Federal Public Defender: US Attorney’s Office (USAO), Department of Justice (DOJ), Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Immigration and Customs Service (ICE), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), or US Postal Inspector.

Description

Appoints attorneys through the Federal Public Defender's office to represent individuals who cannot afford counsel in a variety of circumstances. These include, among others, individuals suspected of, charged with, or indicted for a federal offense as well as individuals contacted to testify or be a witness in front of the Grand Jury in a federal case.
