Youth Activities offered at Greater Maple Valley Community Center

Coordinates weekly activities for area youth, 6th-12th grades including summer trips and a youth council. Also offers an after-school homework help and study center as well as a program dedicated to promoting healthy relationships and dating violence awareness.

Programs that offer a wide variety of activities including arts and crafts, academic programs, sports, reading clubs, workshops and other recreational, leisure, cultural, social and civic activities for school-age children and youth in out-of-school hours. The objective of youth enrichment programs is to promote healthy social interaction and help participants maximize their social, emotional, physical and academic potential.

Youth Enrichment Programs

Programs that answer specific questions regarding grammar, mathematics or other areas of study or help students with homework assignments. Included are telephone hotlines, online assistance and in-person programs offered by the school following regularly scheduled classes or by community centers, libraries or other similar types of organizations.

Homework Help Programs

Programs that attempt to reduce the incidence of date rape, verbal and physical abuse, threats of abuse and other forms of violence that occur between dating teens through a variety of educational interventions which may focus on potential victims and perpetrators; agency, school or health care personnel who work with them; or the community as a whole.  Activities may include classroom-based education, teacher workshops, parent workshops, peer leadership training, counseling groups for males who abuse or threaten a female peer, and community-based workshops for out-of-school youth. Programs may also be available for older people who are dating.

Dating Violence Prevention

Centers, often operated by the local community department of parks and recreation, that offer, at a single location, a variety of recreational facilities such as athletic fields and courts, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and locker facilities. Recreation centers usually offer an organized program of activities for community residents of all ages and provide all necessary equipment.

Offers a comprehensive safety course for women designed to train in prevention measures and adds a hands-on self-defense training. 
Class instructors will teach striking techniques as well as break away tactics.  

Rape Aggression Defense offered by Normandy Park Police Department

Offers a comprehensive safety course for women designed to train in prevention measures and adds a hands-on self defense training.

Programs that offer physical conditioning exercises and teach participants the basic moves of self-defense including how to kick, strike, punch, block, fall and escape from a variety of holds. Techniques from one or more or the martial arts may be included.

Self Defense Training

Programs that help adults become aware of the precautions they can take at home, in their cars and on the streets to avoid sexual assault, and the alternatives they have if they are confronted by an assailant. Sessions may focus on the needs of women, gay men, transgendered individuals or others who may be particularly vulnerable.

Adult Sexual Assault Prevention

Offers trainings and workshops for teens regarding the issues of sexual assault and dating violence. 
Topics include:

Anti-Violence Youth Program offered by API Chaya

Offers trainings and workshops for Asian/Pacific Islander teens around issues of sexual assault, dating violence and other community-focused topics.

Programs, often offered by the schools, that attempt to protect children from molestation and other forms of sexual assault by family members, friends of the family, caretakers or strangers by teaching them about good and bad touches, that their body is their own, that it is all right to say "no" if someone wants to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable, and which encourage them to tell someone if they are approached or assaulted.

Child Sexual Assault Prevention

Programs that attempt to reduce the incidence of violent acts committed by youth on the streets, in the schools or in other settings through a variety of educational interventions which may focus on children of various ages, parents, people who work with families, the schools, health care providers, law enforcement officials and/or the community at large. The program may provide information about model/promising prevention and intervention programs and crisis response strategies; descriptions of the risk factors associated with youth violence; research including statistics on violence committed by and against children and teens; outreach; and/or presentations that may be tailored for a variety of audiences.

Youth Violence Prevention

Mutual support groups whose members are young people, including students, who want an opportunity to share their issues and concerns with other youth in a safe, supportive environment. Meeting formats may include in-person, telephone or Internet options.
