Basic & Transitional Studies offers a variety of programs to help learners of all levels, providing the education needed to prepare for college and career readiness. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are offered to help non–native speakers to communicate in English. Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are for adults who are already proficient in the English language but wish to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills. ABE classes are also for a student whose placement test results require that they improve their basic skills before they head into college–level courses. General Educational Development (GED®) prep classes are available to prepare for taking the GED® test, a placement test that qualifies one for college–level courses. High School + is for adult students who don’t have a high school diploma or a GED. HS+ students can receive a high school diploma by demonstrating their competence in reading, writing, and math within high school subject areas.

Classes and workshops offered through this program include English Classes, Digital Literacy Training, navigating the US Education system, and conversation classes focused on peer mentoring and community building within and across cultural groups.

Offers multiple pre-college programs.   Adult Basic Education Teaches basic English reading, writing and math skills. Classes help students transition into college or career training programs, learn workplace computer skills, discover personal strengths and learn workplace relational skills. General Education Development Helps students prepare for the four-part GED test. Successful completion of the four-part test (Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) earns a GED certificate.   GED certification is equivalent to a high school education and is usually accepted in place of a diploma. ESL Classes help with reading, writing and grammar, speaking and listening, pronunciation, workplace skills, beginning computer literacy and citizenship. Useful English prepares students for real world needs and college-level reading and writing. High School Completion Provides adults 19 years or older an opportunity to earn a high school diploma in a college setting, substituting college classes for remaining high school requirements. High school completion classes (English, math, history, science) are scheduled in the evenings to accommodate adult students with daytime jobs. Students who test into college level may take regular day or evening college courses for high school graduation credit. High School 21+ Assists adults 21 years and older complete their high school diploma and prepare for college level courses.

Provides community schools programs including:   -  Homework help -  Recreation -  Arts -  After-school programs -  Annual month-long health clinic providing general and sports physicals for ages 18 and under -  SmileMobile dental care for elementary students two weeks each year -  Literacy programs for English Language learners

Our employment and adult education services connect community members with meaningful employment at livable wages and other opportunities to build critical skills. Employment case managers and economic empowerment coaches help set goals and viable steps to achieve them. We also team up with local community colleges and other partners to connect individuals to vocational training, internship programs, and help with job placement.

Offers an English for Speakers of Other Languages program that incorporates conversation, adult practical literacy and beginning reading and writing. Classes help improve reading, writing, speaking, listening, technology and academic skills in order to be successful in college and the workplace. Classes are offered at locations throughout South King County, including Burien, White Center, Tukwila, SeaTac and Federal Way.

Offers parenting education, including Kaleidoscope Play and Learn parent/child activity groups. Other classes include: - Toddler Gym - CPR for infants/adults - Life Skills - Cooking and Nutrition - K-12 Tutoring. Offers support groups and workshops for Latino families.  Facilitates support groups to increase family's social support and decrease family isolation.   Also offers family advocacy, application assistance along with information and referral to a variety of other services.

Case managers provide assistance in accessing basic and emergency resources, naturalization assistance, individual ESL instruction, public benefits application procedures. Provides Obama Healthcare and WA Apple Health ( Medicaid) health advocacy. Assists clients in applying for unemployment benefits and SNAP/EBT. Intensive case management services assist immigrants and refugees in overcoming barriers to self-sufficiency that are caused by difficulty in accessing and appropriately utilizing the health and human service systems. Home visits are available.

Offers a multicultural academic program in partnership with the Seattle World School (SWS). Helps recent-arrival students from diverse countries increase their skills in math and English, while understanding and appreciating theirs and each other's cultures. Students may earn credit towards graduation for attending summer school during the months of July and August.

Provides ESL and workforce training to Limited English Proficient clients out of the High Point Center. Provides case management, employment and related services to immigrants and refugee residents. In partnership with Literacy Source, a community-based organization, contracted by the City to provide educational services including classroom instruction.

Provides ELL classes and English development support where needed for students whose first or primary language is not English.

Offers mentorship, education and employment assistance for youth and young adults.

Teaches multilevel English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, with a focus on job-specific vocabulary useful to those participating in the Day Labor program.

Offers Adult Basic Education programs that include classes for: basic computer skills and Microsoft Office, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), high school GED, writing and math, college entrance preparation. Also offers job search assistance.

Transition programs help non-English and limited English speakers understand and navigate American culture.   Programs include:   -  Crime prevention education -  Crime victim assistance -  Naturalization assistance   -  ESL classes

Offers intensive ESL and community ESL programs for people with tourist and student visas, as well as local residents.   Volunteers are recruited and placed with student ESL classes. Volunteers receive sensitivity training and tutoring skills training.   Also offers advanced ESL classes for students focusing on office and customer service/hospitality occupations.   Some child care is available on a fee basis for enrolled students.   ABE/ESL classes are for adult citizens, immigrants and refugees only. These classes will help students to:   -  Develop listening and communication skills necessary as adults in family, community or workplace situations   -  Read and write in English for a variety of purposes   -  Learn about American culture and everyday life in the USA

Offers services and workshops for job seekers. Services for all job seekers: - Job postings, a job bank with computers, resume assistance, phones and fax machine, open computer lab - Resume, cover letter, interview skills and technology workshops - Job fairs, hiring events, employer panels and industry forums - Full service Learning Center operated by Renton Technical College offering ESL, Adult Basic Education, GED and the High School 21+ diploma program. Employment workshops include the following classes: - Computer Assisted Job Search: Provides tools and assistance to conduct an effective job search. This includes setting up an email account, learning where to apply online, completing an online application, converting a resume to text only, posting a resume online and learning about career exploration tools. Basic computer skills are required. - Beginning Internet: Teaches how to use the Internet for job search purposes. No computer experience necessary, however Keyboarding and Mouse class highly encouraged as a prerequisite. - Beginning PC Skills: Computer tutorial to help gain speed and confidence on a computer. Will teach how to manipulate a computer and create a document, as well as how to improve typing speed. All levels are welcome. - Mock Interview: Teaches valuable interviewing tips and provides the opportunity to practice frequently in a supportive and realistic environment. - Resume Critique: Provides resume critique and assistance from an employment specialist. Must have an electronic version of your resume, either on a flash drive or within/attached to an email. Must have two job descriptions of jobs you wish to apply to. Limit 8 people per workshop. - Resume & Cover Letters: Teaches how to write a compelling cover letter and resume. Basic computer skills and/or typing experience preferred. - Women's Worth & Rights in the Workplace: Provides tips and tools for effectively evaluating your worth and negotiation power. Will also cover local, state and federal labor standards and what to do when your rights at work are violated. - Interview Skills: Practice responding to typical interview questions and begin the necessary preparation to ace a job interview.

Learn English or another language with our free classes, conversation circles and online resources. We offer free classes for practicing English skills for daily life, work, and citizenship in our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. Join one of our free English Circle conversation groups to practice with others learning English. Mango Languages is an interactive tool offers more than 70 languages, including English, for children and adults.

Provides individualized education and case management services for youth who have dropped out or left traditional high school.   Program includes:   -  General Education Development (GED) test preparation -  High school credit recovery -  Math and reading remediation -  Computer skills training -  Life skills training   -  Help entering community or technical college training programs   - Paid and unpaid internships and employment support Focuses on career path education and support.   Provides bus tickets if eligible.

Offers day and evening classes for adults whose predominant language is not English.   These classes stress the basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are assessed at entry and placed in a class consistent with their goals. ESL classes are offered in the morning, afternoon, and evening at various times and locations.   Online or hybrid options may be available.

Offers Adult Basic Education programs that include classes for: basic computer skills and Microsoft Office, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), high school GED, writing and math, college entrance preparation. Also offers job search assistance.

Offers ESL classes to adults at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.   Conversation, pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar are taught in a combined skills core class with special emphasis on the skills for survival English and employment-related English. Teachers will help students choose specific skills to supplement their core classes. Classes lead students toward college and career readiness. Classes are offered both day and evening on the main campus, at the New Holly Learning Center, and on the Georgetown campus.

Offers a multi-level Limited English Proficiency (LEP) class for anyone wanting to learn or improve their English proficiency. Class includes learners from a wide range of levels, from beginning to advance, who are placed together in a single group.
