Programs that help people of all ages who have juvenile or adult diabetes understand and manage their illness. Services may include screening programs for early identification of the condition and associated complications; establishment of a treatment regimen; patient education; and self-management skills development assistance which may focus on use of insulin and drugs to control blood sugar levels, blood glucose monitoring, dietary management in different environments (at home, at work, in school, while dining out), menu planning, the role of exercise in relation to food intake, hygienic measures such as foot care and ways to reduce the likelihood of diabetes-related complications which may include heart disease, kidney failure, amputation, nerve damage and blindness. Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for people who have diseases or disorders of the ductless glands which produce hormones that affect the rate of metabolism and metabolism of specific substances, growth and developmental processes, the secretory activity of other endocrine glands, the development and functioning of the reproductive organs, sexual characteristics and libido, the development of personality and higher nervous functions, the ability of the body to meet conditions of stress, and resistance to disease. The ductless glands include the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, the parathyroid glands, the adrenal glands, the islands of Lagerhaus in the pancreas, and the gonads.

Sports Medicine

Ambulatory Pediatrics

Programs that test an asymptomatic individual's blood and tissue to determine the presence of a particular gene or chromosome variation which may lead to the birth of a child with a particular disease or disability; or which determine the presence of specific genes or chromosome variations which predispose the person to a particular disease or disability later in life. Carrier testing is done for a number of conditions including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia (Cooley's anemia), Tay-Sachs disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, Huntington's disease and neurofibromatosis. Predictive genetic testing is available for a number of diseases including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, melanoma and thyroid cancer.

Carrier/Predictive Genetic Testing

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have diseases or conditions that affect the lungs and other chest tissues. Pulmonologists diagnose and treat asthma, pneumonia, cancer, occupational diseases, bronchitis, emphysema and other complex disorders of the lungs.
