Offers a four week pre-apprenticeship training in ironworking, with wages starting at $27. 15 per hour. Run by trade professionals, the program balances classroom studies and on-the-job training while students earn a living wage with healthcare, retirement, and other benefits. As students learn more skills and their abilities increase, their wages increase. 

Participants receive career navigation, tools and work gear, job placement assistance and support services such as help with transportation and obtaining work-appropriate clothing.

Programs that provide a combination of paid, structured on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a designated trade, craft or occupation under the supervision of a skilled craft worker. Apprenticeship programs vary in length from 3-5 years depending on the trade; may be operated by public and private sector employers, employer associations or joint labor/management sponsors; and may be formally registered with the U.S. Department of Labor (which maintains national standards for apprenticeship programs) and State Apprenticeship Councils which operate in 27 states, or less formal, unregistered programs. Individuals who complete their apprenticeship terms in a registered program become fully-qualified journey-level workers with portable credentials that are recognized nationally, often internationally.

Apprenticeship Training

Programs that offer registration, counseling and/or classes which assist trainees in meeting apprenticeship entry requirements in a variety of trades such as sheet metal, plumbing, steam fitting, painting and drywall, electrical, sprinkler fitting, carpentry, air conditioning and refrigeration. Activities may include information on the application and selection process as well as instruction and review in math, reading and mechanical aptitude.

Apprenticeship Preparation

Operates a six-month job training pre-apprentice program for youth. Offers GED/HSD (High School Diploma) completion, case management support, job readiness training and pre-apprenticeship training. Youth work on a two-week rotating schedule; one week participating in GED/HSD completion and job readiness training, and the other week learning construction skills in the shop. After students graduate they receive nine months of follow-up from their case manager to continue to help support them in achieving their goals, including placement in apprenticeship programs in the trades.

YouthBuild offered by YouthCare at South Seattle College's Georgetown Campus

Offers a six-month job training pre-apprentice program for low-income youth ages 18-24. Includes GED completion or high school diploma. Students receive nine months of follow-up from their case manager upon program completion. Pays a weekly stipend.

Programs that provide comprehensive support services for specific populations of at-risk youth such as young offenders, homeless youth, youth living in high-poverty areas and foster youth who need assistance preparing for, finding and retaining paid employment. Services may include vocational assessment; guidance relating to resume preparation, job application letters and questionnaires, interview techniques, appropriate dress and personal-social behaviors that will allow them to get along with employers and co-workers on the job; job skills development support; job placement assistance; limited periods of subsidized employment, where necessary; and/or on-the-job support, as required, to help the individual retain his or her position.

At Risk Youth Employment Programs

Programs that offer employment related training courses, generally in a traditional classroom setting, which provide participants with the technical skills and information they need to perform a particular job or group of jobs. The training has a structured, defined curriculum and may feature lectures, demonstrations, simulations, role-playing, self-study and other similar activities. Classroom style training is also the primary format used for training in the "soft skills" that are required to get a job, stay employed and advance.

Classroom Training

Programs that place people in actual employment situations in order to give them an opportunity to demonstrate their competence and skills, gain practical experience in a field for which they have been trained and/or develop new skills that will be beneficial with respect to future employment opportunities. People are placed on a short-term basis and, if remuneration is involved, are paid by the sponsoring agency rather than by the employer or through a cost-sharing arrangement.
