Programs that provide support for adjusting, adapting or redesigning furniture or equipment or structural elements of school and college/university environments in order to make them accessible to students with disabilities.

School Accessibility

Programs that provide training for family members and other informal caregivers which focuses on care-related activities such as medication management, personal care and making the home environment safe and barrier-free as well as on stress management and other techniques to help the caregiver take care of him or herself. The focus of the training is on building the skills and capacity of the caregiver to manage their caregiving role. Some programs include a caregiver assessment, development of an individualized plan that focuses on the caregiver, setting goals and establishing a routine for ongoing support for the caregiver.

Caregiver Training

Programs that help participants develop or refine their communication skills, usually by focusing on communication in a particular context, e.g., helping parents communicate with their children, helping professionals communicate with their clients and so forth. Training may emphasize active listening skills, problem-solving skills, conflict resolution techniques, body language, empathy, sensitivity to the values and/or cultural background of others, genuineness and other facets of the communication process.

Communication Training

Programs that provide training in the technical competencies unique to a specific occupation that are required for successful workplace performance. The training may be delivered in a variety of ways including apprenticeships, business practice firms, classroom training, internships, OJT or work experience; or may take place in a combination of settings, on-the-job training supported by formal classroom training, for example, or classroom training followed by an internship.

Occupation Specific Job Training

Programs that offer workshops, discussion groups, activities and other types of training that sensitize participants to people with disabilities or others with visible differences such as scarring that set them apart from their peers, help them experience what it is like to have a disability, and share techniques for positive communication and interaction with people who have disabilities.

Disability Awareness Training

Programs that provide information about the causes and origins, preventive measures, symptoms, screening/diagnostic procedures, and/or methods of treatment or management including the latest research for specific illnesses or disabling conditions.

Disease/Disability Information

Programs that provide educational and supportive services for parents with disabilities and/or parents of children with disabilities who want to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to be effective in their parenting role.

Disability Related Parenting Programs

Programs that improve the public's understanding of mental health and mental illness and help people make choices which promote personal mental health, take advantage of opportunities for early detection, develop an awareness of available treatment options and support their ability to deal with mental health conditions when they arise. General mental health information/education programs provide information about a wide variety of mental health related diagnoses rather than specializing in a particular area; and may develop and disseminate materials whose objective is to dispel misconceptions about the nature of mental illness, marshal support for people who have a psychiatric disability or behavioral issue and help to remove the stigma that is often associated with mental illness.

General Mental Health Information/Education

Programs that provide opportunities for students to pursue a course of independent study utilizing material that is communicated via the Internet.

Mutual support groups whose members are people living with a particular mental illness or emotional difficulty. Families and friends may also be welcome. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and provide an opportunity for participants to share information, practical tips for daily living and encouragement about issues related to the condition.

Condition Specific Mental Health Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are individuals who have difficulty controlling their compulsion to acquire possessions which clutter their living space creating cramped living conditions, sometimes blocking exits, creating a fire hazard and putting them at risk for eviction. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet, and provide emotional support, information and resources to help participants discard items they do not need, organize the possessions they wish to keep and, in general, bring order to their lives.

Provides support services to mental health consumers and their friends and families in South King County.

Mental Health Support Services offered by NAMI South King County

Coordinates support services for mental health consumers and their friends and families in South King County including family and consumer support groups and a helpline.

Programs that link individuals who have a particular type of illness with others having the same illness for the purpose of information sharing and support. Included are networking programs that make a portal or other technology available that encourages people living with mental health conditions, disabilities, physical illnesses or other problems to tell their stories about the challenges they are facing and the steps they have taken to cope with their situation. Sharing one's story can help in the person's own recovery but can also be an inspiration and source of encouragement for others in a similar situation.

Patient to Patient Networking

Mutual support groups whose members are people living with a mental illness or condition or are generally experiencing mental or emotional difficulties, without specializing in a particular area. Families and friends may also be welcome. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and provide an opportunity for participants to share information, practical tips for daily living and encouragement about issues related to their experience.

General Mental Health Support Groups

Mutual support groups whose members are the spouses, partners, parents, children, siblings, friends or significant others of people who of people who have clinically significant behavioral or psychological problems, whose own patterns of personal, social and familial coping have been significantly affected by ongoing interaction with and concern about the individual. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet, and provide an opportunity for participants to share information, practical tips for daily living and encouragement about related issues.
